Why this evolution?

Keeping Inuit culture and values at the heart of decisions about our children

After a decade of consultations and exchanges with families and numerous partners and collaborators, the time has come to reclaim decision-making over the well-being and future of our children.

Nunavik Inuit are calling for integrated services that support families in need at every stage of a child’s development and are delivered in Inuktitut, with respect for their traditions and cultural knowledge.

Promising First Steps in Inukjuak

The Pigiarviliutik Initiative

Since 2025, our team in Inukjuak has begun implementing the new intervention model developed by Nunavingmi Ilagiit Papatauvinga. These are important first steps toward putting into practice a unique and culturally appropriate approach to supporting families across Nunavik.
A Message from the Board of Directors

“With full respect for the work and dedication of the many teams who have been in place for so many years, Nunavingmi Ilagiit Papatauvinga has been given the mandate to develop and deploy a new intervention model in Nunavik, one that will take into account the many recommendations put forward over the past 10 years.

This positive and necessary evolution will place Inuit values and culture at the heart of decision-making and of the approach chosen to ensure the well-being of our children and families.”

Overrepresentation of Inuit children

An essential step toward autonomy and
self-determination for Nunavimmiut in youth protection

Inuit have always known how to care for those in need. Nunavingmi Ilagiit Papatauvinga returns to the spirit of these practices and to a holistic vision of support for children and families: supporting vulnerable families, guiding young parents, expanding prevention services and recognizing the role of foster families. Compared to the rest of Quebec, children in Nunavik remain overrepresented in the youth protection system.
